An altogether refreshing break from beating the Great Mobilisation-imperative drum was planned for Chapter 14, but the unprecedently emboldened belligerence of the world’s demagogues was already questioning whether the discussion of democracy could be deferred. Proximate decider was Chartbook 432 “Writing column. Talking w peril” - polycrisis or stroke? by the, profoundly shaken, polymathic Professor Adam Tooze. Anti-democratic action must be defeated by ferocious, profoundly democratic action. Bad actors sure, the literally bad actors too, but here, primarily in the idiomatic, persons with malicious, anti-democratic intent must be beaten by the good, while voter support for the latter is, in the main, still dominant. Playing nice and hoping demagogues will eventually suffer attrition, to be replaced by replaced by halfway-wholesomely decent leaders, guided by their better angels is likely to prove delusional. Demagoguery is solidly in the ascendency, having triumphed over the lie that was a rules-based World order presided over by the West—prime suspect United States is a past master at waiving the rules well before it ruled the waves. Ever-deepening demagoguery will seal a grisly fate not just for the poor-to-miserable 88%, but also for the 99%. Profound democratisation isn’t just the decent path to mobilisation but only one capable of prevailing over the current stroke-the deploy the Jeffrey Epstein/Larry Summers reference highlighted by Adam Tooze afflicted descent into another hell-on-Earth, runaway Hothouse Earth.
