An important test, particularly for the media, would be whether the project could be popularly referred as other than the Giant Causeway. As to whether long-term sea-level rise results in a northern North Island, New Zealand archipelago riven with tidal races rivalling French Pass, or one that harnesses that prodigious renewable resource to power and connect the generations serving in the Great Mobilisation, the choice could barely be more starkseldom is deliberate, alliteration-induced grammar rule-breaking more delicious.

Profoundly starker choices will proliferate elsewhere, but probably on no grander scale than at the no-brainer Strait of Gibraltar, where the locks required—there, and at the Suez—to safeguard the Mediterranean’s 46 000 km coastline, involve less lift than at the piddling Panama, and only a fraction of the locks and liftsonly recently completed of the Three Gorges.
